Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? When you work from home, you have the unique opportunity to decorate your home office exactly as you wish, from the paint colour on the wall, to the desk where the magic happens. Here are a few of our tips on home office design which are conducive to creativity and productivity.
Let there be light — (and lots of it) in your home office design
There’s nothing quite like natural daylight to brighten any space. While it may seem logical to position your desk in the light, remember that sunlight can glare off of a computer screen, or may be annoying if your office chair is directly in its path.
Even with the best outdoor light shining in, you’ll still need a desk lamp, table lamp or floor lamp in your space. If your home office was originally a bedroom, the overhead lighting is probably unsuitable for reading and computer work. Table or desk lamps are both practical and decorative and you can choose a style that suits your décor style which makes it even more fun!
Add a little greenery to your space
There’s nothing like fresh green plants to bring life to your environment. In addition to making your home office look and feel inviting, plants purify the air and can help create a calm atmosphere. Place a few houseplants in your home office design and you’ll feel like you’re out enjoying a stroll in the park.
Colour your space for creativity
A cheery colour palette can put you in a good mood the moment you walk through the door. If you don’t want to go too bold with paint colours on the wall, choose a bold patterned rug or beautifully coloured artwork to grace your office wall. You’re not boxed in a tiny cubicle, so take advantage of all the great wall space you can personalise with your favourite pieces. The happier you are to walk into your office each morning, the more creative and productive you’re bound to be.
Choose comfortable, practical furniture
While an upholstered chair may look stunning and add a feminine touch to your home office, it won’t offer proper back support, so keep in mind that your office needs to be functional first and pretty, second. You can add feminine (or masculine) touches once your furniture is in place. Things to look for in an office chair; make sure that it can be adjusted so that your arms are in line with your desk top and your shoulders are relaxed and that the height allows your feet to be comfortably on the floor.
If space provides, create a cozy seating area
If you have the luxury of a large home office space, consider adding a few chairs or a loveseat for the occasional visitor or for times when you just need to read documents over and want a short break from your desk.
Make sure you have plenty of work space
A work surface that provides you with plenty of room is a must if you want to avoid clutter and chaos. Lack of space is frustrating and counter productive. Your desk top should have enough room to have everything at your fingertips; files, laptop, supplies, a phone charger, etc. Consider using side tables, a chest of drawers or a sideboard in your office as well. Any style of table can be worked into your décor. Only you can decide what works best for you.
Bookshelves and filing cabinets
Bookcases, shelves and filing cabinets can keep files and reference materials tidy yet close at hand. Heavy wooden shelving complements an antique wooden desk, while open metal shelves look fabulous with a modern glass or metal desk. Use a console for a mini coffee station or to hold a water jug and glasses so you won’t have to keep making trips to the kitchen.
A bold wall clock, framed artwork, personal photographs, chalkboard or planning board are all accessories that make an office functional and decorative. Print inspirational quotes for your bulletin board, display a piece of your child’s artwork or proudly hang your diplomas or awards. The beauty of working from a home office is that every little detail is determined by you. From the look of the room, to the ambiance you create with lighting and a fragrance diffuser, your office should be a place where you can be efficient as well as happy to be there.
